There is something different about the world late on Christmas Eve.

That feeling inspired Santa’s Moonlight Journey.

Rather than showing Santa racing through the sky, I imagined him somewhere much quieter—walking along an old snow-covered path beneath the moon, carrying his sack of presents from one home to the next.

His lantern provides a small pool of golden light against an enormous blue winter night.

And he isn't entirely alone.

Cardinals gather in the branches.

A rabbit pauses beside the trail.

A deer watches from beneath the evergreens.

Even the woodland creatures seem to know that tonight is different.

Farther along the path, barely visible among the trees, is a warmly lit home.

Someone is waiting there.

Perhaps thechildren are already asleep upstairs.

Perhaps stockings are hanging beside the fireplace.

Perhaps there is a plate of cookies sitting on the kitchen table.

And Santa still has a little farther to go.
